CEDAR RAPIDS — A walking tour on Saturday will be the final send-off for well-known historian Mark Stoffer Hunter, who is resigning from The History Center effective Tuesday.
Stoffer Hunter may be best known for guiding these walking history tours covering different parts of the community.
“This will give the public a last opportunity to partake in a tour led by me because we don’t know when it is going to happen again,” he said.
Stoffer Hunter, who has been with The History Center in various capacities for decades, said he is leaving to be closer to his family in the Quad Cities and because he said he did not believe he was being paid adequately for his work. He has not ruled out a return to The History Center in some capacity in the future.
The final walking tour is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Saturday beginning and ending at The History Center, 800 Second Ave. SE. The tour is expected to take 90 minutes. The cost is $5 for members and $7 for non-members.
In event of bad weather, the event will be held inside the center as a slideshow presentation. A short, informal reception is planned following the tour.
“It means a lot,” Stoffer Hunter said. “It’s kind of a nice way to say farewell, for now, but hopefully we will see each other again. It’s a way to connect with and thank all of the people who have supported me over the years by coming to the tours I’ve led.”
The event will include a classic sidewalk tour of historic downtown buildings, he said.

Jenny Thielman, a History Center program manager, said the organization plans to continue its schedule of biking and walking tours for the remainder of the year. Volunteers and board members have expressed interest in leading the tours, and it would likely be a mixture of tour guides, she said.
The walking tours are typically the second and fourth Tuesday of each month, while the biking tours are planned for the next four months on May 11, June 8, July 13 and Aug. 17. For more information about the tours, visit historycenter.org/tours.
