CEDAR RAPIDS — They pulled it off.

The ground was squishy, the air was hot and the times were slow, but a last-ditch effort to hold Thursday’s Eastern Iowa Classic cross country meet — on an alternate course, no less — was a success.

“I thought it was a really nice course, honestly,” said boys’ individual champion Kolby Greiner of Iowa City West. “(Race) officials handled this well.”

Early in the week, Seminole Valley and Noelridge parks were deemed unavailable for this event. By Tuesday, Cedar Rapids Kennedy athletics director Aaron Stecker was fiddling on Google Maps to see if Cherry Hill Park was an option as a course. He drew it up online, then chalked it in person Wednesday.

“I thought it was a very nice course,” said Micah Poellet of Linn-Mar, the girls’ champion. “There were a couple hills that provided an obstacle.

“It was hot and windy, and there was a section that was really wet. I wasn’t happy with my race, but it was because of my time.”

With the heat index in the upper-90s, Poellet earned the girls’ title in 20:17, 20 seconds ahead of runner-up Adrianna Katcher of Center Point-Urbana, the two-time defending state champion in Class 3A.

“My goal is usually to jump in front at the beginning and keep holding my pace,” said Poellet, a sophomore.

Linn-Mar prevailed in a tight three-team girls’ battle, scoring 60 points to edge Cedar Rapids Washington (68) and Cedar Rapids Kennedy (69). Washington’s Reagan Gorman was third.

Greiner’s triumph enabled West’s boys to win fairly comfortably. The Trojans compiled 43 points, followed by Kennedy (65).

“Days like this really make you appreciate the team atmosphere,” Greiner said. “I live for days like this.

“This was kind of a tempo run, I guess. The second mile, I opened it up a little bit and told myself to relax.”

Greiner was clocked in 16:46, followed by Kennedy’s Jacob Green (16:54) and Linn-Mar’s Dylan Dolezal (17:07).
