DES MOINES — The go-ahead jump wasn’t his best jump. That was yet to come.
Marion senior Blair Brooks earned the Drake Relays boys’ long jump championship Thursday at Drake Stadium, sailing 22 feet, 8 1/4 inches.
“I didn’t get 23 feet like I wanted, but I had a lot of consistent jumps,” said Brooks, bound for the University of Iowa in the fall.
Entering the finals, Brooks was in a deadlock with Cedar Rapids Kennedy’s Terrell Jordan Jr.; both had a top effort of 22-3, but Jordan’s second-best jump was better by 1 1/4 inches, so Brooks had some work to do.
He did it with his first jump in the finals, a 22-0 3/4 effort that bettered Jordan’s second-best jump. Brooks owned the tie-breaker, but didn’t want to leave anything to chance.
“I didn’t want it in anybody’s hands,” Brooks said. “I motivated myself and got in the right mindset.”
Brooks’ second-to-last jump of 22-8 1/4 gave him some breathing room, which came into play when Austin West of Iowa City West went 22-5 1/2 on his final attempt.
So it was Brooks, West and Jordan in an all-area 1-2-3 sweep.
Brooks will try for another field-event title Friday, when he competes in the high jump.
“We’ll see tomorrow how my legs are,” Brooks said. “We’ll see.”
Gable Sieperda of Central Lyon closed with a final 800 of 2:10 and pulled away to win the 3,200-meter run, in 9:11.16. Myles Bach of Center Point-Urbana (9:24.91) was fourth.
A two-time Class 3A state champion in both the 3,200 and the 1,600, Bach was on Sieperda’s tail before Sieperda pulled away in the final 700 meters.
“It wasn’t my best,” Bach said. “I put myself in position to win. I would have liked to have finished stronger. I’m in shape.
“I’ve been training for this for four years, and I didn’t have my best day in a really important race.”
Camden Cox of Ankeny Centennial and Matthew Carmody of West Des Moines Dowling were second and third. Jeremy Fopma of Marion led for the first mile and finished sixth.
Dawson Ellingerson became Hudson’s first Drake champion in school history, flinging the discus 186 feet, 9 inches. Nick Phelps of KP-WC was second at 168-10. Iowa City West’s Jonathan Gannon (168-0) was fifth.
