Mid-Prairie boys, North Cedar girls rule at River Valley track meet

WEST LIBERTY — Floyd Evans is heading for the University of Iowa next year.

Not for track and field. For microbiology.

“I might run for their club team,” the Mid-Prairie senior said. “But as far as competition, this is almost the end.”

Evans won the 3,200- and 1,600-meter races and ran a 1:59.9 anchor on Mid-Prairie’s winning distance medley relay as the Golden Hawks captured the boys’ team title at the River Valley Conference meet Friday night at Memorial Field.

Mid-Prairie tallied 123 points. West Liberty, led by Tanner Iske’s four wins, shared second place with Northeast with 103.

Evans didn’t compete in track as a freshman, then joined the squad as a sophomore as the Golden Hawks steadily climbed the RVC ladder.

“Our coaches set us up to maximize our points,” Evans said. “And a lot of things were run to (determine) what we’re going to do at districts and state.”

Whatever is decided, Mid-Prairie will shine in the middle- to long-distance events. That’s the Golden Hawks’ bread and butter, and Evans is a key member of it. He raced away late stages of both the 3,200 and 1,600, which he won in 10:00.55 and 4:33.71, respectively.

The 100-meter champion at the Drake Relays last week, Iske ignited West Liberty’s sprints. He won the 100 and 200, and anchored the Comets to titles in the 400- and 800-meter relays. West Liberty won seven boys’ events, the most for any team — boys or girls.

“It went just as I planned it,” Iske said. “It was great to perform in front of our home crowd one last time. Four wins ... it’s amazing to do that here and make my community proud.”

North Cedar won its first RVC girls’ title behind quadruple-winner Grace Proesch. The senior — bound for the Air Force Academy — won the 100, 200 and 400, then capped the meet by anchoring the Knights’ victorious 1,600-meter relay.

“We tried to spread everybody out as much as we could to win the meet,” Proesch said. “We’d never done it in our school history. If you’d have told me when I was a freshman that we’d win a conference title, I’d have never believed it.”

North Cedar accumulated 125.5 girls’ points, enough to outdistance Cascade (109), Monticello (95) and Mid-Prairie (92).

Mid-Prairie’s Hostetler sisters went 1-2 in the 3,000, 800 and 1,500, and Marie Hostetler anchored the Golden Hawks’ winning distance medley relay.

Tipton’s Jamie Kofron, a double-winner Drake, set conference records Friday in the shot put (43-2 3/4) and discus (139-7).
